SMART Machinery was originally founded in 2001 by a technical team experienced in the thread rolling industry – revolutionizing the industry by building a line of secondary operations machinery that went beyond traditional motor-based technology to A machine designed around innovative servo technology.
In 2015, National Machinery LLC, a world-renowned manufacturer of cold/warm forming machinery, acquired SMART Machinery, adding SMART’s line of secondary operations machinery to its comprehensive product portfolio for the metal forming industry.
SMART Machinery offers flat die rolling machines, planetary rolling machines, positioning machines and gasket assembly units.SMART’s flat die rolling machines – the NG series and the NG Maxi series – cover a wide range of part sizes and offer a variety of features. All models are powered by a patented direct drive motor that provides full torque from zero speed and greater energy efficiency than conventional motors.
With no chains, pulleys, belts and gears, the direct drive motor is quiet and maintenance free.A patented servo linear motor is also used to control the induction system.Adjustment of the stroke and timing of the imported fingers, as well as the placement and pressure of the blank moving into the die, can all be easily made through the control screen. An added feature of these flatbed machines is the automatic setup of pre-stored jobs.Past jobs can be recalled through the control screen and automatically adjusted for production speed, rail height and die base position, rail and vibrating bowl vertical position, injector position and die matching.Another unique feature of the NG and NG Maxi is the optional patented servo-driven die matching. The technology is controlled by automatic settings and recalls past mold positions and makes all necessary adjustments.
SMART Machinery also offers the RNG Planetary Thread Roller line, which includes many of the same SMART technology features as the NG Flat Die Machines, such as direct drive motors, servo motor introduction, automatic setup and die matching.RNG rotary machines are suitable for hollow parts because the rotary die does not deform or squeeze the hollow tube of the part.Alternatively, RNG’s rotary dies can also handle heat-treated machine screws, increasing tool speed and tool life compared to flat dies.
SMART can also offer SMART NP pointers, which are machines capable of pointing, chamfering, creating special sharp points, shortening lengths, cutting other different shapes and including the recently developed cutting groove technology. The NP pointer is available in three sizes to cover a variety of part sizes.SMART patented technology is also present in the NP pointers as they also include direct drive motors, automatic settings and servo introductions.Although for this machine, the servo motors control the vertical movement of the head, the introduction/ejection of the blank, and the opening and closing of the gripper on the part.
Also part of the SMART product portfolio is the SMART Evolution gasket assembly unit, which assembles one or two different gaskets on a blank before threading. This evolution can be used in combination with a thread rolling machine or as a stand-alone version.
More recently, SMART has developed technology to make its machines Industry 4.0 compatible.SMART’s Industry 4.0 technology systems are capable of collecting, storing, analyzing and presenting data related to the performance of their machines. The system can collect economic data, i.e. machine production monitoring, and process data, i.e. machine status and thread roll monitoring. The data is then available through multiple digital channels, including email, MES systems, ERP systems, and company intranets.Various company personnel can then access the machine data and conduct further analysis to improve production and reduce costs.Examples of real-world applications of Industry 4.0 include the ability to analyze downtime and initiate corrective actions, as well as compare performance data to analyze productivity.Other additional benefits of Industry 4.0 systems include real-time monitoring and alarm notifications.
Since National Machinery purchased SMART Machinery, customer support for SMART machines has expanded globally to provide better, closer local service.Service centers located in the US, Germany, Italy and China are staffed with qualified service technicians ready to perform SMART related service visits.Parts, mechanical service, electrical service, maintenance manuals and technical assistance are available from any National Machinery or SMART Machinery service location.National’s global reach allows representatives to assist clients in many different languages.
